Tara was in pain.
She had got a blister on one of her toes.
The pain led to fever.
This happened in the middle of the term tests.
“Amma I want to go to tomorrow’s test somehow,” she told her mother.
“You can go if the fever subsides” mother replied.
Tara hoped and prayed that it would.
After all, she had studied hard.
However she knew there was no way of her wearing shoes next day.
The foot hurt a lot.
“Will they let me wear slippers to school?” Tara asked mother.
“Perhaps” mother answered giving Tara another dose of medicine.
By dinner time the fever had subsided.
Tara had dinner.
She knew she had to eat well if she wanted to be strong the following day.
“Tara I spoke to your class teacher” mother informed her at dinner table.
“She said to tell you to wear a slipper on the foot you have the blister” she added.
“The other foot?” Tara asked.
“You have to wear a shoe as usual” mother said.
Tara’s brother Tarun burst out laughing.
“That would be quite a sight” he said.
Tara felt embarrassed.
Both mother and father reprimanded Tarun.
“If you had a blister you would have made it an excuse to stay at home” mother reminded.
“Tara is determined to sit for the exam tomorrow” she said.
Tara felt happy when her parents defended her.
The next morning she was feeling much better.
There was no fever.
She wore a slipper on the foot with the blister and wore a shoe on the other and left for school.
What made Tara think that she would not be able to wear shoes to school next day?
What made Tara embarrassed?
According to mother what would Tarun have done if he had a blister?
